What does the steering column lock do?

The steering column lock combines the anti-theft steering lock with the ignition and starter switch on the upper steering column. With the key removed, a spring-loaded bolt engages the column to lock the steering. Turning the key withdraws the bolt and operates the auxiliary, run and start circuits.
