What does the axle buffer do on a Discovery 2?

The axle buffer is the progressive rubber bump stop that limits suspension travel at full compression on the Discovery 2. Mounted between the axle and chassis, it cushions the axle as it rises to the top of its travel, protecting the damper, spring and surrounding structure from bottoming out.

Where is the axle buffer fitted, and how many are needed?

The axle buffer fits both front and rear suspension on the Discovery 2 as the damper bump stop. Vehicles typically use one buffer per corner, so a full set is usually four. Buy the quantity your job needs, as they're commonly replaced in pairs on an axle.

What happens if a worn axle buffer isn't replaced?

A perished or missing axle buffer allows harsh metal-to-metal contact over large bumps and under heavy load. That accelerates wear of the damper and its mounts. A heavy knock or thud from the suspension when the axle bottoms out is the usual sign it needs replacing.
