What is the RTC3387 master cylinder repair kit used for?

RTC3387 is the repair kit for the brake master cylinder on non ABS vehicles. It supplies the renewable seals used when the master cylinder is stripped and rebuilt, restoring the sealing surfaces that hold hydraulic pressure. It's the alternative to replacing the complete cylinder when the bore is still sound.

Which vehicles does this non ABS repair kit fit?

RTC3387 fits the Defender 90 and 110 from 1987 to 2006 without ABS, up to VIN HA701009, and the Series 2 and 3 109 inch twin system. ABS equipped vehicles use a different master cylinder, so this kit does not apply to them.

When is a repair kit the wrong choice?

A repair kit only works if the master cylinder bore is still smooth and unscored. If the bore is pitted, corroded or ridged, new seals won't hold pressure against a damaged surface and the pedal will go soft again. Inspect the bore once the cylinder is stripped, before committing to the rebuild.

Can the old master cylinder seals be reused?

No. Master cylinder seals are single use. They take a set in the bore and swell slightly in brake fluid, so a removed seal won't reseat reliably. Brakes are the last place to economise on a seal, which is why the whole set is renewed together.

How do I confirm my Defender is a non ABS car?

Check the VIN against the HA701009 limit, then look for an ABS pump and modulator in the engine bay and an ABS warning lamp in the instrument pack. Defender 90 and 110 coverage here runs 1987 to 2006 without ABS. If ABS hardware is present, this is the wrong kit.
