What is the STC837 power steering box?
The STC837 is a lightweight-type power steering box for right-hand-drive Land Rovers, supplied complete with the drop arm fitted. It's the Adwest-pattern box used on the Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic, converting steering wheel input into movement at the drag link.
Where does the steering box mount?
The power steering box mounts on the chassis rail behind the front bumper on the right-hand-drive side, with the drop arm connecting to the steering linkage below. It's fed by the power steering pump and steers the front wheels via the drag link on Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic.
What are the signs a steering box needs replacing?
A worn steering box typically shows as excessive steering play, a fluid leak from the sector shaft seal, or stiff steering. On Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic the box wears with age and mileage, and internal wear can't always be adjusted out, so replacement is common.
Will the STC837 fit a left-hand-drive vehicle?
The STC837 is a right-hand-drive steering box, so it won't fit left-hand-drive vehicles, which use a different box. It's the lightweight Adwest type with the drop arm included, for RHD Defender, Discovery 1, and Range Rover Classic. Confirm your steering box type before ordering.
