Track Rod End Assembly for the steering linkage, connecting the track rod to the steering drop arm and transmitting movement from the steering box to the road wheels.

This joint uses a left-hand thread, allowing the effective length of the track rod to be adjusted when setting front wheel alignment (toe). It locates within the track rod and steering damper assembly.

The greaseable design incorporates a grease nipple, permitting periodic lubrication of the internal ball joint to maintain free articulation and reduce wear.

Frequently asked questions

What does the RTC5870GR track rod end do?
The RTC5870GR track rod end connects the track rod to the steering linkage, transmitting steering movement to the front road wheels. It's a ball joint that lets the wheel pivot for steering while moving with the suspension. This is the left-hand thread version, used on Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic steering setups.
Why does this track rod end have a left-hand thread?
The left-hand thread lets the track rod length be adjusted for front wheel alignment (toe), with one end left-hand and the other right-hand threaded. Order the correct hand, a left-hand thread end won't fit a right-hand thread location. Check which side your steering linkage needs before fitting the RTC5870GR.
Is the RTC5870GR a greaseable track rod end?
Yes, the RTC5870GR has a greaseable design with a grease nipple, letting you lubricate the internal ball joint to maintain free movement and reduce wear. This helps extend joint life compared with sealed-for-life types. Use a grease gun on the nipple as part of routine chassis lubrication.
What are the signs a track rod end needs replacing?
A worn track rod end typically shows as play or knocking in the steering, uneven or rapid front tyre wear, and vague or wandering steering. On Land Rover steering linkages a failed ball joint affects steering safety and can fail an MOT, so replace it once free play develops. Always check alignment after fitting.
How do I confirm the RTC5870GR fits my vehicle?
The RTC5870GR fits Defender (1987-2016, from VIN 7A000001 for 2007-on), Discovery 1 (1989-1998, VIN FA393361 to WA799999) and Range Rover Classic (1986-1994). Steering parts changed across these ranges, so check your VIN against the listed breaks and confirm you need the left-hand thread end.
