Frequently asked questions

What does this rear shock absorber do?
This rear shock absorber damps the compression and rebound of the rear coil spring, mounting between the chassis and the rear axle. It controls body movement and helps keep the tyres in contact with the road over uneven ground. Fitted at the rear of the Land Rover Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Defender 90/110.
How many rear shock absorbers should I fit?
Fit rear shocks as a pair. Replacing both sides together keeps damping even across the rear axle, which is why most people renew the left and right rear dampers at the same time on the Discovery 1 or Defender 90/110.
What are the signs a rear shock absorber has failed?
A failed rear shock absorber usually shows as a floaty or bouncy ride, poor control over bumps, and can cause uneven or cupped rear tyre wear. Fluid weeping down the body of the damper is another common sign it's worn out on these Land Rovers.
