Crankshaft Position Sensor for the V8 EFI petrol engine running the GEMS (Generic Engine Management System) engine management setup.

The sensor is mounted at the crankshaft and reads the teeth of the reluctor ring as the engine turns, generating the signal the GEMS engine control unit uses to determine crankshaft position and engine speed. This signal is the timing reference for ignition and fuel injection. A failing sensor typically causes misfires, erratic running, hard starting or a no-start condition.

Frequently asked questions

What does the crankshaft position sensor do on a V8 GEMS engine?
The crankshaft position sensor reads the reluctor ring teeth as the V8 EFI petrol engine turns, giving the GEMS engine control unit its crankshaft position and engine speed signal. That signal is the timing reference for ignition and fuel injection. It fits Discovery 1 and Range Rover P38 V8 petrol.
Is this the correct sensor for GEMS engine management specifically?
Yes, this is the crank sensor for the V8 EFI petrol running GEMS (Generic Engine Management System). The later Thor engine management typically uses a different sensor, so confirm your V8 runs GEMS before fitting. GEMS was generally used up to around the 1999 model change.
What are the signs of a failing crank sensor on these V8s?
A failing crank sensor on the GEMS V8 typically causes misfires, erratic running, hard starting or a complete no-start. Because it's the timing reference for ignition and injection, a dropout can stall the engine. Intermittent hot-start faults are a common symptom on Discovery 1 and Range Rover P38.
How do I confirm this crank sensor fits my vehicle?
This crank sensor fits the Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover P38 (1994-2001) with the V8 EFI petrol engine on GEMS management. The key check is engine management type, not just model, since GEMS and the later Thor system differ. Use your VIN to confirm the management system.
