Olive — a compression ferrule used to form a sealed joint in rigid pipework, fitted in the turbocharger pipework of the 2.5-litre six-cylinder diesel engine.

The olive seats between the pipe and its union nut. As the nut is tightened the olive is compressed onto the tube and against the fitting seat, producing a leak-tight metal-to-metal seal that holds against pressure and heat.

An olive deforms permanently when first made up, so it is treated as a single-use part and renewed whenever the joint is disturbed to ensure the connection reseals correctly.
