Oil Pump Relief Valve Plunger is the pressure-regulating component within the oil pump assembly of the 2.5L 4-cylinder diesel engine.

The plunger slides within the relief valve bore machined into the oil pump body. When oil pressure exceeds the design threshold - set by the spring load acting against the plunger - the plunger lifts off its seat and bypasses excess flow back to the sump, preventing over-pressurisation of the lubrication circuit. Wear or sticking of the plunger in its bore can cause erratic oil pressure, making replacement necessary to restore correct pump regulation.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Oil Pump Relief Valve Plunger do?
The Oil Pump Relief Valve Plunger is the pressure-regulating component inside the oil pump assembly on the 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine. It slides in the relief valve bore and lifts off its seat when oil pressure exceeds the spring-set threshold, bypassing excess flow back to the sump to prevent over-pressurising the lubrication circuit.
Why does the relief valve plunger need replacing?
The relief valve plunger needs replacing when it wears or sticks in its bore, which causes erratic oil pressure. A sticking plunger stops the oil pump regulating correctly, giving high or low pressure. Renewing it restores correct pump regulation, and it's typically replaced during an oil pump overhaul.
Which Land Rovers does this plunger fit?
This plunger fits the Defender (1987-2006), Discovery 1 (1989-1998, 200TDi up to VIN LA081991), and Range Rover Classic (1992-1994, 200TDi from VIN JA610294), all with the 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine. Use your VIN to confirm the engine and build, as the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic have VIN breaks.
Is fitting the relief valve plunger a DIY job?
Fitting the relief valve plunger typically means accessing the oil pump, which on these engines usually involves removing the front cover or pump assembly. It's more involved than a basic service item, so it's usually done during engine or oil pump work. Check the spring and bore condition while it's apart.
