Differential Case - the rotating carrier at the centre of the front axle differential assembly.

The crown wheel bolts to the case, and the case in turn houses the differential gear set: two pinion gears carried on a cross shaft, meshing with the two side gears that drive the halfshafts. This arrangement transmits drive from the crown wheel to both halfshafts while allowing the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds through a turn.

This is the two-pinion configuration used in the Land Rover type front axle.

Frequently asked questions

What does the FTC5399 differential case do?
The FTC5399 is the rotating carrier at the centre of the Defender's front differential. The crown wheel bolts to it, and it houses two pinion gears on a cross shaft meshing with the side gears, letting the left and right front wheels turn at different speeds through a turn.
How do I know if my Defender uses the 2-pinion case rather than another type?
The FTC5399 is specifically the two-pinion configuration used in the standard Land Rover type front axle. If your differential uses a different pinion count or axle type, this case won't be a direct match, so check your current differential setup before ordering.
How do I confirm the FTC5399 fits my Defender?
This fits Defenders built 1987 to 2016: from VIN LA930456 for 1987-2006 models and from VIN 7A000001 for 2007-2016 models. Check your chassis number falls in the correct range for your build year.
