The steps extend automatically when a door is opened and retract once the doors are closed, keeping them tucked under the sill and clear of obstacles while driving. A safety cut-off halts the mechanism if a step meets an obstruction. The steps can also be lowered with the doors closed, which gives a raised standing platform for reaching the roof.
