Air locker - a pneumatically operated differential lock that replaces the standard differential centre in a Rover-type axle running 24-spline halfshafts with a 31.5 mm shaft diameter.

Unlocked, the unit behaves as a conventional open differential and allows the left and right halfshafts to rotate at different speeds through corners. When engaged, compressed air from a 12 V on-board compressor drives a locking mechanism inside the differential case that ties the side gears to the carrier, so both halfshafts are forced to turn together and drive is delivered to both wheels regardless of the traction available at either one. Locking is selected by the driver from the cab.

Installation requires the differential to be stripped and the crown wheel and pinion re-set. A crown wheel spacer is used and longer crown wheel bolts are required; the bolts are not supplied with the unit. Operating the locker also requires an air compressor, air line and switch assembly.
