Handbrake Expander Lever Kit - operating lever assembly for the transmission parking brake mounted at the rear of the transfer box.

The lever is actuated by the handbrake cable and acts on the shoe expander inside the transmission brake drum, forcing the brake shoes outward against the drum to lock the driveline. Free movement and correct pivot geometry at the lever are essential for full application and clean release - wear or corrosion at the pivot reduces holding effort and can leave the shoes partly applied, causing drum heat and drag.

Normally renewed as part of a transmission brake overhaul alongside the shoes and drum.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Handbrake Expander Lever Kit used for?
It's the operating lever assembly for the transmission parking brake, mounted at the rear of the transfer box. The lever is actuated by the handbrake cable and pushes the shoe expander inside the transmission brake drum, forcing the shoes outward to lock the driveline.
What happens if the expander lever pivot wears or corrodes?
Wear or corrosion at the pivot reduces holding effort and can leave the shoes partly applied, which causes drum heat and drag. Free movement and correct pivot geometry are essential for the brake to apply fully and release cleanly.
Should this be replaced alongside the shoes and drum?
It's normally renewed as part of a full transmission brake overhaul, alongside the shoes and drum, rather than fitted on its own. Replacing it in isolation while leaving worn shoes or a scored drum in place won't fully restore holding performance.
Which vehicles does this fit?
It fits the Range Rover P38 (1994-2001) with the transmission (handbrake) drum brake at the rear of the transfer box. It's not for later Range Rovers with a different parking brake design.
