Expansion Valve - the refrigerant metering device at the evaporator inlet of the air conditioning system.

It restricts the high-pressure liquid refrigerant fed from the receiver/drier so that it drops in pressure and boils off inside the evaporator, absorbing heat from the air passing through the matrix, and regulates that flow to suit cooling demand so only vapour returns to the compressor.

Fitted to vehicles with factory air conditioning. Renew the O-ring seals at the pipe joints whenever the valve is disturbed.
Vehicle Model Land Rover Defender up to 2016
Fitment Notes DEFENDER 1987-2006 — A/C evaporator expansion valve; models fitted with air conditioning. VIN break (V)XA159807.

Frequently asked questions

What does the JQD100390 expansion valve do?
JQD100390 is the expansion valve at the evaporator inlet, metering refrigerant into the air con circuit. It restricts high-pressure liquid refrigerant from the receiver/drier so it drops in pressure and boils off in the evaporator, regulating flow so only vapour returns to the compressor.
Why would a Defender's expansion valve fail?
Expansion valves typically clog with debris in the refrigerant or stick from wear, usually showing as weak or inconsistent cooling, or visible frosting on the pipework near the evaporator. Renew the O-ring seals at the pipe joints whenever the valve is disturbed to avoid a fresh leak.
Does the JQD100390 fit all Defenders with air conditioning?
JQD100390 fits the Defender (1987-2006) with factory air conditioning, up to VIN break (V)XA159807. Defenders built after that VIN break use a different expansion valve, so confirm your VIN before ordering.
