Upper Timing Chain for the timing drive of the M62 B44 4.4L V8 petrol engine.

The upper chain runs between the intermediate sprocket and the camshaft sprockets, transferring drive from the lower chain up to the cylinder head and holding the camshafts in correct relationship to the crankshaft. It runs against the upper chain guides and is held under tension by the hydraulic chain tensioner.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the upper timing chain sit in the V8 engine?
It's the top stage of the M62 B44 4.4L V8's two-stage timing drive, connecting the intermediate sprocket to the camshaft sprockets and keeping the camshafts correctly timed against the crankshaft.
What else should be replaced alongside the upper timing chain?
The upper chain guides and the hydraulic chain tensioner it runs against are typically changed at the same time, since a new chain against worn guides or a tired tensioner won't hold tension properly.
Is replacing the upper timing chain a DIY job?
No. It requires the front timing cover off and precise camshaft-to-crank timing re-synchronization on the M62 V8, which calls for the correct locking tools and workshop experience rather than basic hand tools.
How do I know if the upper timing chain has stretched?
A rattling noise from the top of the engine, especially on a cold start, is the main giveaway. It often triggers a camshaft correlation fault on the engine management system as the timing drifts.
What's the difference between this chain and LHN000030?
This is the Genuine Land Rover chain sourced through AllMakes; LHN000030 is the BritPart-sourced OEM equivalent for the same M62 4.4L V8 application on the Range Rover L322 2002-2009. Both fit the same engine, so the choice is quality tier and supplier.
