Lower Timing Chain for the 4.4L M62 V8 petrol engine.

Runs in the front timing case between the crankshaft sprocket and the intermediate sprocket, forming the first stage of the two-stage timing drive that in turn drives the camshaft sprockets. It operates against the chain guide rails and the hydraulic tensioner.

A stretched lower chain presents as timing rattle from the front of the engine, most audible on start-up, and as camshaft timing correlation faults. Renew the guides and tensioner alongside the chain.

Frequently asked questions

What does the lower timing chain do on the Range Rover L322 V8?
It runs in the front timing case between the crankshaft sprocket and the intermediate sprocket, forming the first stage of the M62 4.4L V8's two-stage timing drive that then drives the camshaft sprockets.
What else should be replaced with the lower timing chain?
The guides and tensioner should be renewed alongside the chain, since it runs against the guide rails and is held tensioned by the hydraulic tensioner. Replacing the chain alone risks early repeat failure.
Is replacing the lower timing chain a home mechanic job?
No. It sits deep in the front timing case on the M62 V8 and requires the timing cover off plus precise cam-to-crank timing re-synchronization, so this is a specialist workshop job.
What are the signs the lower timing chain has stretched?
Timing rattle from the front of the engine, most audible on start-up, along with camshaft timing correlation faults on the engine management system, are the classic symptoms of a stretched lower chain.
Which Range Rover L322 V8s use this lower timing chain?
It fits the 4.4L M62 V8 petrol (BMW-sourced engine) built 2002 to 2005. Later L322 V8 model years may use a revised timing chain design, so confirm your build year before ordering.
