The tensioner consists of a spring-loaded arm and idler pulley that bear against the serpentine accessory drive belt. It maintains constant belt tension as the belt stretches in service and damps the load fluctuations produced by the driven ancillaries, keeping the belt correctly seated in the pulley grooves.
