Crown Wheel and Pinion is the final-drive gear set inside the differential, comprising the ring (crown) gear and its matched drive pinion.

The pinion is driven by the propeller shaft and meshes with the crown wheel to turn the differential carrier, transmitting drive from the propshaft to the axle halfshafts and setting the axle final-drive ratio. The crown wheel and pinion are lapped as a matched pair and must be supplied and fitted together. This is a heavy-duty four-pin differential application.
