The unit controls the rate at which the front road spring compresses and rebounds, keeping the tyre loaded against the road surface and limiting body movement under braking and cornering. The spring carries the vehicle weight; the damper controls its motion. Deterioration is gradual and is usually noticed as float over undulations, increased nose dive under braking, or uneven tyre wear.

Supplied as the damper unit alone, without the coil spring. One unit is fitted per side, and dampers are replaced in axle pairs so damping rates stay matched from side to side.
