The shock absorber (damper) controls movement of the rear suspension, damping road-spring oscillation to keep the wheel in contact with the road and to stabilise body movement over uneven surfaces. It is fitted between the body and the rear suspension.

This unit covers the right-hand side only; the left-hand rear corner uses a different damper. Dampers are replaced in axle pairs so damping rates stay matched from side to side.
