Frequently asked questions

What does the auxiliary drive belt do?
The auxiliary drive belt is the multi-ribbed belt driven by the crankshaft pulley that turns the engine's front-end accessories. It transmits drive across the accessory run to the engine-mounted ancillaries. Fitted to the 4.4L V8 diesel in Range Rover L405 and Range Rover Sport L494.
Should the belt be replaced with the tensioner?
The auxiliary belt is typically replaced along with its tensioner and idler pulleys, since a worn tensioner is a common cause of belt wear and noise. On the 4.4 V8 diesel it's good practice to inspect the pulleys when fitting a new belt. That avoids a repeat job.
What are the signs the auxiliary belt needs replacing?
Look for cracking, glazing, fraying or missing ribs on the belt, plus squealing on start-up. On the 4.4 V8 diesel L405 and Sport L494 a failed belt stops the accessories it drives. Replace a worn belt before it snaps.
