Valve Stem Seal seals the point where the valve stem passes through the cylinder head valve guide, controlling the oil reaching the stem and preventing oil being drawn into the combustion chamber or exhaust port.

Fitted at the top of the valve guide beneath the valve spring, it is used on the petrol engines and is renewed during cylinder head or valve spring work. Worn stem seals are a common cause of oil consumption and blue exhaust smoke on start-up.
