The sensor measures the concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust stream and reports it to the engine management system. The ECU uses this reading to control the exhaust aftertreatment - managing NOx trap regeneration and SCR dosing to keep tailpipe emissions within limits. It threads into the exhaust downstream of the engine.
