Glow Plug - the pre-heat element for one cylinder of the 2.0L four-cylinder AJ200 / AJ20D4 diesel engine, threaded into the cylinder head so its tip projects into the combustion chamber.
During cold starting the plug heats the air charge so the injected fuel reaches its ignition point without prolonged cranking. The control strategy also runs the plugs on after start-up, holding combustion stable through warm-up to reduce white smoke, cold-running noise and hydrocarbon emissions.
A failed plug shows as difficult cold starting, a rough idle for the first minute of running and a glow-plug or engine management warning. Plugs age at a similar rate, so replace the full set together. Work on a cool engine, clean carbon from the plug bores before fitting and observe the specified torque - these plugs seize and snap if over-tightened or wound into a fouled thread.
