Exhaust gas temperature sensor for the exhaust after-treatment system.

The sensor is fitted in the upper position of the exhaust front pipe and catalyst section and reports gas temperature to the engine control module. That signal protects the turbocharger and the after-treatment hardware from overtemperature and controls diesel particulate filter regeneration, where fuelling is altered to raise exhaust temperature until the trapped soot is burned off.

Applies to the 4.4L SDV8 turbo diesel engine in EU6D emissions specification with a diesel particulate filter. A failed sensor stores an exhaust gas temperature circuit fault and prevents regeneration completing, which in turn leads to a progressively blocked filter.
