Turbocharger - right-hand secondary unit of the sequential twin-turbocharger installation on the 3.0L V6 turbo diesel engine.

The secondary turbocharger works in series with the primary unit. At low engine speed it is held in circuit to build boost quickly; as exhaust flow rises the turbine shut-off valve routes gas past it and the primary unit carries the load, so charge pressure is maintained across the whole rev range. Compressed air leaving the turbocharger passes through the charge air cooler before entering the inlet manifold.

The turbocharger is driven directly by exhaust gas energy and runs on oil-fed bearings, so it depends on clean oil at correct pressure.

Renew the oil feed pipe and the oil filter and clear all debris from the intake and charge air ducting before fitting a replacement unit - carried-over debris from a failed turbocharger will destroy the new one.
