Coolant Expansion Tank - the header and overflow reservoir of the engine cooling circuit.
It receives coolant displaced from the radiator and engine as the system heats up and returns it as the system cools, absorbing the volume change that would otherwise raise circuit pressure. It also provides the fill point and the level check for the cooling system, and the pressure cap seats on the tank neck to set the operating pressure of the circuit.
The moulded tank and its cap seal are wear items: hairline cracking around the seams and the filler neck, or a perished cap seal, will show up as slow coolant loss and repeated low-level warnings.
