Steering Gear - the complete rack-and-pinion assembly at the centre of the electric power-assisted steering system.

The gear converts rotation of the steering column input shaft into lateral travel of the rack, which acts through the track rods and steering arms to turn the front wheels. Assistance is generated by an electric motor mounted on the gear housing rather than by an engine-driven hydraulic pump, with the steering control module on the assembly metering assist torque against steering angle, driver input torque and road speed. An electrically assisted gear of this type is also the actuator for steering-based driver assistance functions where those are fitted.

Because the assembly is handed, it is not interchangeable with the opposite-hand gear. After fitting, the steering angle sensor requires calibration and front wheel alignment must be reset.
