Cylinder Block Ladder Stiffener - the ladder-frame reinforcement in the lower crankcase of the 2.4L Duratorq-TDCi HPCR 140PS diesel engine.

The stiffener bolts to the underside of the cylinder block and ties the main bearing saddles together into a single rigid frame, so that crankshaft main bearing alignment is held under combustion and torsional load. It also forms the machined mating face that the sump seals against, which makes the condition of its flange and sealing surface critical to a leak-free bottom end.

The stiffener is disturbed whenever the sump is removed or the crankshaft main bearings are accessed. Clean both sealing faces back to bare metal, renew the sealing arrangement, and follow the specified bolt tightening sequence and torque on refitting.
