Particulate Matter Sensor - the soot-measuring sensor in the exhaust aftertreatment circuit of the 2.0L AJ20D4 diesel engine.

The sensor is fitted in the exhaust downstream of the diesel particulate filter. Its heated sensing element collects soot from the passing gas flow, and the resulting change in electrical resistance across the element is reported to the engine control module. From that signal the control module assesses how effectively the particulate filter is trapping soot and raises a fault when filtering efficiency falls below the on-board diagnostic threshold, which is why the sensor is fitted only to emissions specifications that require diagnostic monitoring of the DPF.

The sensing element cannot be cleaned, recalibrated or serviced separately, and it operates in a high-temperature position - a sensor reporting out of range or with a damaged lead is replaced as a unit.
