Lambda Sensor - Diesel - heated exhaust gas oxygen (HEGO) sensor in the diesel exhaust and emissions control system.

The sensor measures residual oxygen in the exhaust stream and reports it to the engine management system, which uses the signal to trim fuelling and to manage exhaust aftertreatment, including diesel particulate filter regeneration. An integral heater element brings the sensing tip up to operating temperature soon after a cold start so that closed-loop control begins early in the drive cycle.

A degraded sensor commonly stores an oxygen sensor fault code and can present as increased smoke, higher fuel consumption or filter regeneration cycles that fail to complete. Avoid contaminating the sensing tip when fitting, and tighten to the specified torque.
