Balance Shaft - counterweighted shaft forming part of the engine balancer assembly in the lower block.

Driven from the crankshaft and running at twice crankshaft speed, it generates an opposing inertial force that cancels the second-order vibration inherent to an inline four-cylinder engine, preventing that vibration being transmitted through the block into the mountings and body structure. Fitted to the 2.0L Ingenium four-cylinder diesel (AJ200 / AJ21D4).

The shaft journals run in pressure-fed bearings. Wear or bearing damage presents as a rise in engine noise and vibration that tracks engine speed, and warrants inspection of the oil feed to the balancer assembly at the same time.
