Heated exhaust gas oxygen (HEGO) sensor, rear (post-catalyst) position, for the 4.4L V8 petrol engine (M62 B44).
The sensor sits in the exhaust downstream of the catalytic converter and monitors the oxygen content of the gas leaving it. Comparing this signal against that of the front sensor lets the engine control module assess catalyst conversion efficiency and apply a slow correction to the fuelling trims. An integral heater element brings the sensing tip to operating temperature quickly after a cold start.
The engine carries one rear sensor per bank. A failed sensor typically shows as a catalyst-efficiency or sensor-circuit fault code and an emissions test failure rather than a driveability complaint.
