Air Mass Meter (mass air flow sensor) for the M62 B44 4.4L V8 petrol engine, mounted in the air cleaner outlet of the intake air system.
The sensor sits between the air filter element and the throttle body and measures the mass of air drawn into the engine using a heated-film sensing element. The engine management ECU uses this signal as its primary load input for fuelling and ignition timing calculation. A drifting or contaminated element typically presents as poor idle quality, hesitation under load, raised fuel consumption and stored air-flow fault codes.
The sensing element is sensitive to oil mist and dust; the air filter element and intake ducting should be checked for contamination whenever a meter is replaced.
