Aftermarket Part
Aftermarket: Quality alternative. This is a quality alternative, designed to fit and function like the original part, often at a more competitive price.
Starter Motor for the 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine, part of the engine starting circuit.

The unit bolts to the bellhousing flange at the engine and gearbox joint face and cranks the engine through a pinion that engages the flywheel ring gear. Its integral solenoid switches the high-current feed from the battery when the start signal is received, brings the pinion into mesh with the ring gear, and releases it once the engine runs under its own power.

Mounting flange pattern, pinion tooth form and solenoid terminal layout are matched to this engine and its flywheel. Slow or laboured cranking on a healthy battery and charging system usually points to worn brushes, a failing solenoid or a dragging armature within the unit itself.

Inspect the flywheel ring gear teeth for wear or damage when the starter is removed, as a chipped ring gear will quickly damage a replacement pinion.
Vehicle Model Land Rover Defender up to 2016
Fitment Notes DEFENDER 1986-2006 — 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol only. Does not fit diesel or V8 variants.

Frequently asked questions

What does the starter motor do?
The starter motor bolts to the bellhousing flange and cranks the engine through a pinion that engages the flywheel ring gear. Its integral solenoid switches the high-current battery feed, brings the pinion into mesh, and releases it once the engine runs. Fitted to the Defender 2.5L four-cylinder petrol.
Which engine does it fit?
It fits the Land Rover Defender up to 2006 with the 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engine only. It does not fit the diesel or V8 variants, as the flange pattern, pinion and solenoid layout are matched to this engine and flywheel.
What causes slow cranking?
Slow or laboured cranking on a healthy battery and charging system usually points to worn brushes, a failing solenoid, or a dragging armature inside the starter itself. Rule out the battery and connections first, then suspect the unit.
Should I check the flywheel ring gear?
Yes. Inspect the flywheel ring gear teeth for wear or damage when the starter is out, because a chipped ring gear will quickly damage a replacement pinion. Fixing the ring gear first protects the new starter.
