Starter Motor for the 4.0L Cologne V6 SOHC EFI petrol engine, part of the engine starting circuit.

The unit mounts to the joint face between engine and transmission and cranks the engine through a pinion that engages the flywheel ring gear. Its integral solenoid switches the high-current battery feed when the start signal is received, drives the pinion into mesh with the ring gear, and releases it once the engine runs under its own power.

Mounting flange, pinion and solenoid terminal arrangement are specific to this engine and its flywheel. Because the starter sits low on the engine and transmission joint, its main feed cable and earth path are exposed to road dirt and heat - check both for corrosion and voltage drop before condemning the unit, as either fault produces the same slow cranking as worn brushes or a failing solenoid.

Inspect the flywheel ring gear teeth for chipping or wear while the starter is out; damaged teeth will quickly ruin a replacement pinion.
