It forms one of the main coolant runs between the engine and the radiator, moulded to the original routing so the bends hold their shape under system pressure and do not chafe against adjacent components.

Rubber coolant hoses harden and craze with age and heat cycling, typically first at the clamped ends. Renewing the hose while the cooling system is already open avoids a repeat drain-down later.
