Transmission Oil Cooler - the heat exchanger in the automatic transmission cooling circuit that removes heat from the transmission fluid before it returns to the gearbox.
The cooler sits in the front cooling pack alongside the radiator and is fed by the transmission fluid cooler lines. Fluid leaving the torque converter passes through the cooler matrix, gives up its heat to the airflow entering the front of the vehicle, and returns to the transmission at a controlled temperature. Fitted to the 4.4L V8 petrol (M62 B44) with the 5-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.
Fluid temperature is the dominant factor in automatic transmission service life, so a cooler that is blocked, corroded or leaking shortens the life of the clutch packs and valve body. Impact damage to the matrix, internal blockage restricting flow, and weeping at the cooler line unions are the usual reasons for replacement.
