Brand BEHR
Viscous Fan Coupling for the 4.4L V8 DOHC petrol engine, mounted between the front drive pulley and the engine cooling fan.

The coupling drives the fan through a temperature-sensitive silicone fluid clutch. As air passing through the radiator heats up, a bi-metallic element opens an internal valve, fluid enters the working chamber and the fan is driven closer to drive speed. When the engine is cold or running at road speed the coupling slips and the fan freewheels, reducing parasitic drag and noise.

A coupling that has lost its fluid leaves the fan permanently slipping, which shows up as overheating in traffic and on low-speed work. A seized coupling drives the fan continuously and is heard as constant fan roar.

Frequently asked questions

What does the viscous fan coupling do?
The viscous fan coupling drives the engine cooling fan through a temperature-sensitive silicone fluid clutch on the 4.4L V8 petrol engine. As radiator air heats up, a bi-metallic element opens a valve and the fan is driven closer to drive speed; when cold or at road speed the fan freewheels to cut drag and noise.
Which Range Rover does this fan coupling fit?
This viscous fan coupling fits the Range Rover L322 2002-2009 with the 4.4 V8 petrol engine (BMW M62 DOHC). It's specific to that engine's front drive pulley arrangement, so confirm your L322 has the 4.4 M62 petrol before ordering.
What are the signs of a failed viscous fan coupling?
A coupling that has lost its fluid leaves the fan permanently slipping, showing as overheating in traffic and on low-speed work. A seized coupling drives the fan continuously and is heard as a constant fan roar. Either symptom means the coupling needs replacing.
What's needed to fit the fan coupling?
Fitting typically needs a fan coupling spanner set to hold the pulley and release the large coupling nut, which can be tight. It's usually a manageable job for a competent home mechanic, though the nut thread direction and access around the 4.4 V8 pulley should be checked first.
