The ring seals the connection between the turbocharger elbow (PNH500440) and its mating face, containing pressurised charge air at the joint. A hardened or permanently compressed ring leaks boost and shows as reduced power under load, so the seal should be renewed whenever the elbow is removed rather than refitted.
