Bonding Lead - earth strap within the chassis wiring harness.

Provides a low-resistance earth path between the body and the chassis, maintaining electrical continuity for the body electrical circuits that return to earth through the chassis rails.

A corroded or fractured bonding lead raises earth resistance across the whole return path, which typically shows up as dim or flickering lighting, erratic instrument readings and slow cranking rather than as a single failed circuit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RRC8681 bonding lead?
The RRC8681 is an earth bonding lead in the Land Rover Defender chassis wiring harness. It provides a low-resistance earth path between the body and the chassis, keeping electrical continuity for body circuits that return to earth through the chassis rails.
What happens if the bonding lead corrodes?
A corroded or fractured bonding lead raises earth resistance across the whole return path, which can cause dim lights, flickering or odd electrical faults on the Defender. Renewing the RRC8681 restores a clean earth between body and chassis and often clears intermittent gremlins.
Where is the bonding lead fitted on a Defender?
The bonding lead is part of the Defender chassis harness, strapping the body to the chassis to maintain the earth return. Because it lives in an exposed underbody area, it is prone to corrosion and is worth checking when chasing electrical faults.
Which Defender models does the RRC8681 fit?
The RRC8681 fits Land Rover Defender chassis harnesses from 1987-2006 (from VIN XA159807) and 2007-2016 (from VIN 7A000001). Confirm your VIN, as the bonding lead routing follows the chassis harness for your build.
