Universal Joint for the propeller shaft, measuring 75 mm across the bearing caps with a 27 mm cap diameter. Sealed type, supplied without a grease nipple.

The universal joint is the cross-and-bearing assembly carried in the yoke at each end of a propshaft. It transmits drive between the transfer box output flange and the axle input flange while accommodating the continually changing shaft angle as the suspension articulates. It consists of a hardened cross running in four needle-roller bearing cups, retained in the yoke by circlips. Used on both front and rear propshafts.

The sealed construction has no provision for periodic greasing: the joint is replaced rather than re-lubricated once the bearings develop play. Measure the existing joint across the bearing caps before ordering, as the 82 mm joint is visually similar but is not interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC3458GB universal joint used for?
The RTC3458GB universal joint connects two sections of a Land Rover propshaft and lets drive transmit through the angle between them. It's a sealed unit with no grease nipple, so it can't be re-greased in service. It fits Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic propshafts.
Where on the vehicle is this propshaft UJ fitted?
This propshaft UJ fits front and rear propshafts depending on the model. On Defender up to 2016 it's a front (chassis CA252579 to 1A612404) and rear propshaft joint; on Discovery 1 the front propshaft; on Range Rover Classic the front (1986-1991) or rear (1992-1994). Position varies by chassis number.
What are the signs a propshaft universal joint needs replacing?
A worn propshaft UJ typically shows as a clunk on drive take-up, vibration through the floor at speed, or a squeak that changes with road speed. Since this is a sealed joint with no greaser, once the bearings dry out it can't be serviced and needs replacing. A failed UJ can drop the propshaft.
How do I confirm this UJ fits my Land Rover?
Confirm fitment by model and chassis number. It suits Defender front (chassis CA252579 to 1A612404) and rear propshafts, Discovery 1 1989-1998 front, and Range Rover Classic front or rear by year. Check your VIN against the chassis break for your propshaft position before ordering.
