Clutch Hose for the clutch hydraulic circuit, carrying fluid from the rigid pipe run to the slave cylinder on the bellhousing.
The flexible section is required because the engine and gearbox move on their rubber mountings relative to the chassis; a rigid pipe at this point would fatigue and fracture. The hose is reinforced to resist the pressure generated when the clutch pedal is depressed, and any swelling of the bore under pressure is felt directly as a soft pedal and incomplete clutch release.
Deterioration is usually internal and not visible from outside: the liner can break down and act as a one-way restriction, leaving the clutch slow to release or dragging when hot. Inspect for surface cracking, chafing and dampness at the end fittings.
