RTC6061NG - Starter Motor
When the solenoid is energised from the ignition switch it performs two jobs in sequence: it throws the drive pinion forward into mesh with the flywheel ring gear, then closes the heavy main contacts that feed battery current to the motor windings. The motor cranks the engine until it fires, after which the one-way clutch in the drive allows the pinion to overrun and withdraw rather than being driven by the engine. The unit covers both carburettor and Lucas EFI V8 configurations.
Typical failure symptoms are slow or laboured cranking with a known-good battery, a single solenoid click with no rotation, a harsh grinding on engagement from a worn pinion or ring gear, or the starter continuing to run after the engine has started.
Disconnect the battery before removal, and check the earth strap and battery-to-starter cable condition before condemning the motor - high resistance in those connections produces very similar symptoms.
