Distributor Setscrew is the clamping fastener for the distributor within the ignition system of the 3.5L V8 twin-carburettor petrol engine.

It secures the distributor clamp against its mounting boss, holding the distributor body at the position set during ignition timing adjustment so the timing cannot drift in service. Applies to both Stromberg and SU carburettor installations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Distributor Setscrew used for?
The distributor setscrew is the clamping fastener that holds the distributor in the ignition system of the 3.5L V8 twin-carburettor petrol engine. It secures the distributor clamp against its mounting boss so the distributor stays at the position set during ignition timing.
Which engines and vehicles use this setscrew?
This setscrew is used on the Defender (1987-2006) with the 3.5L V8 twin-carburettor petrol engine only, covering both Stromberg and SU carburettor installations. It is not used on fuel-injected V8 engines.
Why does the distributor setscrew matter for timing?
The distributor setscrew keeps ignition timing from drifting. Once you set the timing, the setscrew clamps the distributor body in place so it cannot rotate in service, which keeps the engine running as timed.
