Frequently asked questions

What is the SKT5001 timing kit?
SKT5001 is a Gates timing kit for the 2.0 litre T16 Mpi petrol engine in the Discovery 1. It supplies the timing belt for that engine. AllMakes lists the fitment as 1993 to 1998 within the Discovery 1 range.
Which Discovery 1 engines does this fit?
The 2.0 litre T16 Mpi petrol only. Discovery 1 models with the 3.5 or 3.9 V8, the 200 TDi or the 300 TDi use different timing components, so confirm the engine before ordering. The T16 was the lower volume petrol option in the range.
Why does the timing belt need replacing?
A timing belt is a wearing rubber component that hardens and cracks with age and heat. If it fails in service the valve timing is lost immediately and engine damage is a real risk. Replace it to your vehicle service schedule rather than waiting for symptoms, since there usually are not any.
Is a timing belt change a DIY job on the T16?
It is a specialist job for most people. The engine has to be locked at the correct timing position and the belt tension set properly, and a mistake either way risks serious engine damage. Anyone without the timing tools and experience is better off using a workshop.
