Starter Motor Drive Assembly is the pinion and overrunning clutch unit that transmits torque from the starter motor armature to the flywheel ring gear, within the engine starting system.
The drive rides on the helical splines of the armature shaft. When the solenoid throws the engagement lever the pinion slides into mesh with the ring gear; once the engine fires, the one-way roller clutch overruns so the running engine cannot back-drive the armature. A worn drive shows up as a starter that spins without cranking, that fails to engage, or that grinds against the ring gear teeth.
For the 2.5L four-cylinder diesel starter motors - naturally aspirated, turbocharged, 200 TDi and 300 TDi.
Inspect the flywheel ring gear teeth whenever a drive assembly is replaced; a damaged ring gear will quickly destroy a new pinion.
