Starter Motor Solenoid is the electromagnetic switch mounted on the starter motor body, forming the switching element of the engine starting circuit.

It performs two functions in one stroke: the plunger throws the engagement lever that slides the drive pinion into mesh with the flywheel ring gear, and at the end of its travel it closes the heavy-duty contacts that feed full battery current to the motor windings. A failing solenoid typically presents as a single loud click with no cranking, or as intermittent starting once the internal contacts and copper disc have burned.

For the 2.5L four-cylinder diesel starter motors - naturally aspirated, turbocharged, 200 TDi and 300 TDi.

Check the main battery and earth cable terminations before condemning a solenoid; high resistance in the supply produces the same symptoms.
