The VM diesel uses separate cylinder heads clamped to a common crankcase, and the head gasket is supplied in graded thicknesses so that compression ratio and valve-to-piston clearance remain within tolerance despite manufacturing variation in piston height. The correct grade is selected from the measured piston protrusion above the block deck, and the identification notches on the edge of the gasket denote that grade.

This gasket is the two-notch, 1.52 mm grade. Grades are not interchangeable - measure piston protrusion before selecting a thickness.
