Crown Wheel & Pinion - the final drive gear pair for the Rover-type differential, 10-spline pinion, as used in the two-pinion differential centre.

The pinion is driven by the propeller shaft and meshes with the crown wheel bolted to the differential case, turning the drive through 90° and providing the final gear reduction between propeller shaft and halfshafts. Crown wheel and pinion are cut and lapped together during manufacture, so they are supplied and must be fitted as a matched pair - the two gears cannot be mixed with parts from another set.

Installation requires pinion depth, backlash and bearing preload to be set to specification using a dial gauge and marking compound. An incorrectly shimmed pair will run noisily and fail early.
